Effective communication is the key, so I'd opt for a restaurant, lounge, or chic bar that would facilitate such communication. This means the environment wouldn't be too loud or volatile. I WOULD NOT opt for a movie or a play for the first date because I think that the main focus should be establishing a connection with the other person rather than on a third-party performance.
