Why vanity you ask? How else would you call a page where someone says how great s/he is, how cute, how smart, how sincere, how interesting and knows what they want, brags about their other qualities, likes and dislikes, hobbies, and adventures.

If this page would have a status message like Facebook, My Space, or Tweeter it would be even greater. I could write messages to my followers like: I made a sandwich, I drink a cup of tea, I go to bed, I go to the washroom, I am singing in the shower. People really need to know what you are doing every moment of your exciting life. I guess people with low intellect are worried about some other people's problems...

Anyway, here is my bragging session.

Remember, you are not alone! Like the other 52% (the percentage of the total Canadian population that was single as of July 1, 2007) I am happy and comfortable being single and JUST LOOKING around here (and there) to see if I stumble upon something exceptional. I have no other way (other than my stated attitude) of explaining the contradiction between the above percentage and the thriving business of personals websites. It is all about window shopping... Maybe there is an explanation in the study at the end of my bragging session?

I am an eduicated ;-), unemployed, obese, depressed, sedentary, 72 years old young man. If you are one of those ladies asking for good hygiene and teeth brushing as a major requirement in order to meet with a man from this site I have to confess I am in need of some dental work. I hope to find someone with dental coverage so I can get it done. I guess long years of living under the bridge and not using a tooth brush got me here.

Looking for a few 27 to maximum 33 years old hot women with no kids, no baggage, own their own home(s), have great jobs that allows them to travel and add me to the ticket, and of course drive Porsche or Lotus. I do not have one so she should come and pick me up for our dates. I have a bicycle though... I am trying to loose some weight so I exercise as much as I can. Ya, ya, I know it contradicts the sedentary claim but what the heck, I can not have only bad traits...

I also hope you like kids, I have 7 of them, so you will be my Snow White! You might ask why am I looking for a few women? Well, I am already happily married but my religion allows me at least 4 wives so I hope you do not mind the Bountiful life style...

My pictures are from way back when I was 25. I understood looking at the pictures on this website that this is what you do to attract the unsuspecting... so I coloured my black and white collection for posting it here. I was told yesterday by a visiting friend that I look bigger than last year when she saw me last time so I might not look exactly like in these pictures... I hope bigger was not supposed to be a polite way for fatter... I was called well built before by some polite woman so I am used with that.

Musical taste? Wedding and burial tunes... They celebrate kind of the same event so that is why I like them. I also like reading, watching TV (have calluses the size of a communion waffle on my thumbs from the remote) and of course like long walks on the beach, looking at the night sky for falling stars and far away galaxies...

The "singular-single" syndrome

Jean Twenge is a psychology professor at San Diego State University and author of "Generation Me: Why Today's Young Americans Are More Confident, Assertive, Entitled -- and More Miserable -- Than Ever Before" and co-author of the upcoming "Narcissism Epidemic" with W. Keith Campbell. Based on recent research she has conducted to learn about current attitudes toward relationships, Twenge confirms, "There is in fact a massive cultural shift at work here." She says the number of women who are romantically uninvolved is a result of one major factor: our culture tells us we don't need relationships.

Call it the "singular-single syndrome" -- we have it. Twenge recently conducted a study of 200 student participants at San Diego State, and 90 percent of them answered the questionnaire stating they live by grand individualistic philosophies like, "You shouldn't ever need anyone else to make you feel complete" and "You have to make yourself happy." Based on this study and a handful of others Twenge has conducted in the last few years, she concludes that today's young adults feel they need to be completely self-sufficient in their happiness.

The fact is, young American adults view deep emotional involvement with others as weakness and dependence. It's not just that our culture accepts and accommodates the single lifestyle now -- it's that it actually disparages the individual who isn't focused solely on her own personal advancement. The ubiquitous teachings from our capitalist culture media, Boomer-generation parents who toiled to teach us the importance of pursuing personal goals, and teachers in an increasingly survival-of-the-very-fittest education system -- all these emphasize the individual and her goals, not her need for involvement with others.
