What I do, what I drive and what kind of money I make really shouldn't be the first thing you ask me about. Ask me what I like to do, my favorite movie, something other than canned material. Punctuation, Grammar and the likes show that you you pay attention to details, and also show that the little things in life count just as much. I'm articulate and thoughtful. I take care of my appearance. I like a balanced mix of culture and technology.

Someone asked me what my greatest accomplishment was and how I find balance in everything. I thought it only fitting to post my reply because I really don't feel like typing it over again every time someone asks. So here goes:

GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT: I like to think of this one in terms of how have I most exceeded my expectations of self in the Human capacity. To accurately gauge this, someone would need to understand everything leading up to that event. Otherwise, telling you that realizing that life now, was no longer abut me ..... might be lost and the magnitude with which that moment impacted me forever remains prominent.

FINDING BALANCE IN LIFE: I have by and large found that people who ask how I do this have little or none in theirs or they're simply grasping for a better way to gain perspectives on the thing that surround them in some immediate and consuming manner.

A book by Dr. John Kabat-Zihn titled, "Wherever You Go, There You Are" is a good starting point. Having a childhood that had both the influences of a mother who is a violin teacher, and the community that surrounds that lifestyle; and a father that served in the American Air Force, and had some down home laid-back approach to stressful situations, gave me a light to shed on treating people as i would wish them to treat me.

It also helped me to realize that people are quick to criticize what they do not understand. Being ignorant is easy. Understanding someone else's perspective... not so much. I equate it to being on a jury..you must hear the speaker out even if you do not agree.

You see, no matter how many things you acquire, how much schooling you have; how many places you've been, how many people you claim to know; if you take all the superficiality that is our everyday interaction, that reduces us to relinquishing our command of vast descriptive passages, that actually paint a mental picture for others and look underneath and none of it means much if you don't have substance in your life. God forbid we sound intelligent and risk being socially ostracized. Society frowns on those that don't "fit in". I understand how this works. It makes it easier to smile and nod, yet difficult when you consider that these individuals are our future.

In short, I find balance at both ends: I devote a chunk of time to self-improvement, another to taking in some form of culture, another for bonding with friends regardless of levels of social scene..(they're still my friends). A chunk to benefiting others just by being there to listen. A chunk to my family to let them know i care. And mostly, a chunk to allow myself time to re-center. This is the most important time. It is never structured and always involves re-hashing things in my head, and then doing a mental dump of it all once I'm done with it. After I'm finished with it... what's the use of keeping it? That has a lot to do with how I am able to wake up every morning, and look at the trees and be amazed how they just sit there and blow in the wind, and not be bothered by what goes on around them. It's very peaceful.

Unlocking my will power was one of my greatest personal growths. It has changed my life and brought me happiness and success in the everyday. It truly is the little things that matter. And it's never not important enough to say what you're thinking or feeling. How everyone reacts is their choice! That's the uniqueness of the human condition. You can choose to feel however you want. And life will move on regardless.
