About Me
Having a relationship isn't about auditioning people for the role; it's about finding someone you care enough about to write the role for.
I'm a Brit in a land of larger-than-life Americans, which makes me a rarity around here. I can't say that I understand the culture, but I do feel lucky to have an objective point-of-view on this perplexing land of yours (which is huge).
Someone told me recently that I'm an amalgam of Captain Picard, Sherlock Holmes and Joe Strummer. I'm rocker of a sort - but with class; clean, educated. I am drug, disease, and drama free - I'm fashionable, an innovative gourmet cook, keep a tidy space, and take good care of myself.
I'm a particularly shy person; so, on any given night I can be just as content at home with a good book, podcast or, (on a rare occasion) a TV show as I would be going out. I have to admit that the bar-scene here bores me to catatonia - and has for years. I'll occasionally go out for a round with my mates, but it's not my favourite thing to do by any means. Coffee-shops, museums, the cinema, plays, gigs, bookstores, photography excursions, late-night drives... these things are far more interesting to me. Anything that stimulates the mind is worth doing. Shared experiences are priceless, and I love being introduced to new things.
I can be very intellectually audacious but I balance that by being comfortable knowing that no one can ever know everything. I have a thirst for knowledge and a veritable "grab-bag" of interests. I honestly can't say that anything I do I consider a "hobby." To me that implies a level of interest in something that's far too casual. All the same, I'll try at least anything once, and I'm always game for a laugh - even if my idea of fun isn't always the same as someone else's.
With music I have to be honest; I can be a culture snob - I am Rob Fleming. I went to Art School, and have an opinion on everything! My cultural snobbery is essentially harmless; I'm just passionate about art and culture. I've got a musical library that spans from Baroque classical to New Wave Punk to shoegazing and beyond. There are just a few genres I won't listen to (Hip-Hop, Electronica, anything not recorded on condenser microphones and/or produced by a major label since 2001). On a given night you're just as likely to hear Billie Holiday coming from my living room as you are to hear The Clash, Led Zeppelin, Chopin, Johnny Cash, Sigur Ros, or Mott the Hoople.
Dreams and aspirations? Well, I started a small film production company and have been very fortunate to have some great contracts. I've worked on films that have gone to Cannes, Malta, and Sundance. Within 5-8 years I want to expand and have the means to produce some of my own work. I'd be lying if I said that I didn't want to be as well known as Spielberg - who doesn't want notoriety? Though it's far more important to me to leave something behind that inspires people to keep their own aspirations alive. I won't coast through my life on autopilot.
How would I describe myself? I've never been good at answering that question. Recently I put it to someone in an e-mail and was happy with my answer, so I'll just plagiarize myself and put it here:
A friend of mine says that I "have a very rock 'n roll, art school, andy Warhol, leather-jacket and shades way about me, but I'm classy, cook like a chef, listen to Baroque classical music, and read period literature." I'm a mixed-bag: very passionate about culture and just want to experience as much of it as I can.
I'm not looking for anything serious at the moment; Good company, good conversation, the occasional romantic "collision." Despite this emotional fidelity is not a problem for me. I want to explore new kinds of relationships with new people. I'm attracted to intelligence, creativity, wit, charm, grace, and warmth. I find women who have the confidence to invest in their happiness and creativity inspiring. I don't want to hear from people who only see the conventional. I grew up in more than 10 countries; I'm probably not going to fall neatly into a mass frame of reference. If you're open-minded, and want to share, I'd love to hear from you.
First Date
Coffee, a movie, a play, concert, bungee jumping (something I've yet to do), A moonlit walk on the beach (or equivalent) would be a highlight. Dinner out or possibly Dinner in (if you are comfortable) - I'm an aspiring gourmet cook.
