I don’t know if I have gotten any wiser as I have gotten older but I do know I have learned a few truths. Some things that used to seem so important have become less so. I’ve learned that I don’t have to win every argument; in fact I’ve learned that often when you win an argument you lose something else. Sometimes you lose the respect of others. Winning at all costs can be very expensive.
I’ve learned that I am not always right and admitting I am wrong is not a bad thing. I’ve learned that I have some basic beliefs that will never change. I still believe in love, respect and honesty. I still believe that when you give your word or make a promise it means something. I still believe in monogamy and commitment. I have learned that it better to be single than to be in a relationship that causes you pain.
I’ve learned that you do recover from what life throws at you. I’ve learned the importance of laughter, especially not taking yourself too seriously. I’ve learned that none of us is perfect but it is those imperfections that make us human and interesting. And finally I’ve learned that when you are holding someone’s hand your joy is increased and your sorrow diminished.
