When I was a kid, we had crab-apple wars
With the next-door neighbours
In rural Nova Scotia. One day,
They hung fishing net
Too fine to see,
Between the trees
On the property line
And retreated behind it when it was our turn to throw.
Other days
We went hunting for crabs along the shore,
Or hid (from no one)
In caves. Now I
Spend time amongst the stacks in
Used book stores,
Waiting for the apple
With my name on it
To bounce in through the door.

Amongst my numerous possessions
Is a stainless steel fridge
With a bottom-mounted freezer and built-in ice-maker.
You amongst yours
Have a 'Snoopy' snow-cone maker.
