I come from somewhere off the beaten track, having been born and raised in South Africa and worked in many other countries. But I have now put down roots in Portland, and I am loving this new-found solidity.

I am warm and caring, and interested in just about everything. I feel most comfortable hiking in the mountains, having a long meaningful conversation over a glass of wine, dancing wildly or slowly with friends, and volunteering for my own version of the cause-of-the-day. I have always chosen to work with marginalized people, in small villages in Africa and Asia, and more recently in homeless shelters and residential centers for mentally ill.

If all that paints a rather serious picture, I have misrepresented myself. Mostly I am playful and energetic, with a ready laugh. I feel emotionally and materially secure, and I like to think I have matured like the best wine -- with zest and spirit. I'm looking for the same in someone else.

I love challenges. I see the next frontier for myself a the exploration of real intimacy. I've learned a lot by blundering around for the past 9 years of single life, and finally I think I'm ready.

A first date for me must be uncomplicated and casual, like a short walk or hike, somewhere close by, like Ladd's Addition tree-lined streets, Forest Park or Mt Tabor. Followed by a beverage of some sort, depending on the time of day or evening. That way the chemistry can be checked out without much investment of time or energy.
