About Me
Hi, my name is Jim. Thanks for clicking!
I usually have something going on all the time, like college (currently working on a B.S. in Economics), business trips (about 12 times per year), or some sort of music project. I did a little stage acting in high school, and I really enjoyed it. I can see myself auditioning for plays again.
I'm not a big fan of spectator sports or video games. I would rather go see a foreign film or hang out at a museum. I like games of skill and activities that involve hand-eye coordination, physics, geometry, fluid dynamics, and tribology, like bowling, pool, canoeing, archery, and target shooting. Fishing is great anytime the fish are biting more than the mosquitoes & black flies.
I like almost every kind of music, including opera, classical, some hip-hop, and most jazz. On the radio, I like cutting-edge rock on 89X, WRIF2 (on HD radio), and Lithium 024 on Sirius. Anberlin, The Used, Incubus, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Silversun Pickups, Paramore, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Chevelle, Muse, and The Donnas are some of my current favorite bands. I also like the local Detroit music scene.
I like country music when the sound is built around a really good guitar, banjo, or fiddle player. Abstract jazz, oldies, and anything played on a harmonica will make me a little crazy after a while, but anything is tolerable in small quantities.
I grew up in what USED to be the "country" (Novi), so I'm used to having horses and big dogs around. (I haven't been on a horse in years, but I'd jump at the chance to do some riding.) Black cats seem to like me more than other types of cats. (What's up with that?) My job takes me out of town frequently, so I don't have any pets right now.
I'm a habitual gentleman. I open doors, help ladies on with their coats, hold their chairs, walk next to the curb, etc.
I used to be involved in TV and video production. I sometimes make comments about lighting, camera work, directing, etc. when I'm watching the local news. If you find it annoying, just tell me to pipe down.
I was the guy in your high school Government class who was usually arguing with the teacher while everyone else was trying to sleep. Politically, I'm all over the map. I prefer liberals at the Federal level, moderates at the State level, and conservatives at the local level.
Useless facts are my specialty. I'm getting better at citing references.
For adult beverages, Guinness is my usual choice. Scotch (single-malt, of course) on the rocks runs a close second place. I've given up on American wine. Spend a week in the Alsace region of France during their wine festival, and you probably will too. (Those pesky French keep all of the good stuff for themselves.)
I have no tattoos or piercings, nor do I plan on ever having any done.
Some notes on my "Interests" listed above:
I trained to become a massage therapist a few years back. I graduated from the school, but never made the jump to the professional level. I still have my table and linens, and I enjoy swapping massage with other trained therapists.
I have a pilot's license, but I am not current. All I need is a BFR, a medical, and somebody who's willing to rent me an airplane. My house is on the downwind leg of runway 27 of Oakland-Troy, so I'm constantly reminded of the fun that I'm missing out on.
I ride a Honda 919. It gets 45 mpg and is fun to ride whenever the weather is good. It's not a good bike for two-up trips over 50 miles. It's basically a crotch-rocket with no fairings, the foot-pegs placed slightly forward, and the handlebars higher than the seat, instead of level with the seat. If you like riding on the back for hours, you'll have to be patient while I save up for a K1200LT. No, I will not consider a Harley until they start building a bike that doesn't attract so much drama. And chrome.
In cars or on motorcycles, I like twisty, scenic roads like M-119 (the "Tunnel of Trees"), the Tail of The Dragon, and the Angeles Crest Highway.
I play guitar and sing, and I love to perform. It's just a hobby - I'm not considering quitting my day job.
Bicycling is my favorite exercise. I like long rides on Paint Creek Trail, Hines Drive, most Metro Parks, etc. I work out with free weights and run a couple of miles every day. One of these days, my "Body Type" is going to change from "Average" to "Athletic".
I resist long conversations via e-mail or telephone prior to our first meeting. It takes five minutes of face time to figure out if there's mutual attraction. Why spend days at the keyboard or hours on the phone?
If you recognized my headline from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, we will probably get along fine.
First Date
No sky-diving. I refuse to jump out of a perfectly good airplane on a first date. Save that for the fifth or sixth date. I'll try any culinary creation that doesn't try to bite back. I like spicy food, but it doesn't like me, so I have to approach with caution. I'm disciplined about not drinking excessively. I like to remain in control of myself, and I don't like hangovers.
