About Me
I live for whitewater canoeing. It's such a great rush, and a great feeling of accomplishment when you beat the river instead of it beating you. I love live music and traveling, especially together. If the Old Crow Medicine Show or the Drive-By Truckers are playing within a five hour drive, I tend to drop everything and go. It's like church for me. I don't work that hard anymore. I don't have to. I survived a terrible crash that left me paralyzed from the waist down for a time. It was a hard row to hoe, but I beat those odds, too. So now I spend my time between my house in RVA and my farm out in the countryside near Smith Mountain Lake. We raise beef cattle, so the majority of my time is spent in cutting and baling hay. So literally, I make hay for a living. I also grow feed for a cousin's dairy operation nearby. The work is satisfying, and it means a lot to me to work the same land that my people have worked for over two hundred years. One of these days I want to sell my house in town and live out in the country for the rest of this ride. Raise some sheep and some hogs, a bunch of chickens in the yard, plant an orchard and vineyard, grow the majority of what I eat, and make whiskey and brandy from my excess corn and fruit. Essentially, I'd just love to live the agrarian myth. I love to play music - a guitar, fiddle and banjo and a nice, roaring bonfire make for a good time. Just sitting around the fire and passing the jar, tearing up an old-time fiddle tune here and there - Heaven to me. Cooking is a big joy for me as well, though I find it boring to cook for myself. Having others enjoy what I've made is where I get the real pleasure from cooking - doubly so when it is something that came from my garden. In addition to veggies, I like to grow flowers as well. I have a nice butterfly garden that I expand every year - lots of host plants, food plants and nectar plants. I host Monarchs, Tiger Swallowtails, Black Swallowtails and several varieties of Hairstreaks. Keeping a safe environment for them is a constant hassle versus a chemical-spraying, "green lawn" neighbor.
First Date
I promise it'll be something fun - but I kinda need to get to know you a little bit before we start talking "dates". I'm just not that kind of girl. :P
