Someone once said "First dates are interviews" and I believe that holds true. I think a first date is when you get your first glimpse at what a person is really like and while you won't get the whole thing it will tell you whether or not there might be something to build on. I think first dates should be casual, no pressure events over lunch/dinner to get to know the other person.
