About Me
I think I'm more well-rounded than your average geek. I do tech support for a living, and while I do enjoy the work I prefer to define myself by my hobbies.
My biggest passion is photography. I love to travel and take pictures of what I find, particularly if there are mountains involved. I also like trying to capture someone's personality with my camera. The only problem with being a photographer is that I'm usually the one taking the photos, so pictures of me are self-shot or goofy photos friends caught and sent me.
I like to work photography in with my other big hobby: kayaking. It's very relaxing to get out on the water, and it's great exercise. I've had the occasional close encounter with an alligator, but that's just part of life - collecting stories about all the dumb things you managed to survive. That's my life, anyway.
I'm not the average guy. Not big into sports unless I'm playing. Happier with Guinness or cider when I do drink, but I don't drink often. I'm a gentleman and know how to behave in polite company, but I have a twisted sense of humor. More of a Marx Brothers fan than Three Stooges, though schadenfreude runs deep in me.
I love to cook, and I'm admittedly kind of a food snob. I'd rather eat at a family-owned restaurant than in a big chain. I also think it's important to eat real food rather than stuff out of a box. Once you get comfortable in the kitchen it's easy to make just about anything. I'd rather have a small dinner party than go to a nightclub, though I have to admit I do make regular appearances at my local Irish pub. There's just something about the atmosphere.
I like studying languages. I speak Spanish and French well enough to get by. I took a year of Mandarin and remember just enough of it to get into trouble, and I've picked up phrases in a half-dozen other languages. Having another language at my disposal has come in handy many times, and language is just another key to understanding how people think.
My musical interests are all over the place. I collect traditional music and instruments from around the world. I play drums (hand drums), and I hope to be able to do more than just annoy my neighbors with my other instruments someday. When it comes to more mainstream music, I'd have to say my favorite genre is New Wave. I also like blues, jazz from the 30's and 40's, swing, rockabilly, and a lot of other music that defies definition.
Some favorite artists: Flogging Molly, Afro Celt Sound System, Peter Gabriel, U2, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash, Varttina, Keb Mo, Ali Farka Touré, Regina Spektor.
I'm practical enough to understand the importance of a career and money, but what matters to me is truly experiencing life. I love road trips because you really get to know both your destination and your travel companions, and on a grander scale I look at life the same way. I try to surround myself with good people so we can help each other get wherever the heck it is we're going.
First Date
First dates are fun. I like being able to swap stories and get to know each other. For that reason I like to start things off in a small restaurant, preferably a favorite of mine or yours. Where it goes from there depends on what we both enjoy. I have a strong sense of adventure, and Orlando has a lot to offer if you take the time to look.
