I like to put some planning into a first date but I also like to get a feel for where things are going. Sometimes the first date is on a week night and you just want to meet the person and see if there is mutual interest in spending more time together. Other times a first date that was intended to last only a couple of hours goes into the wee-hours of the morning because neither person wants the conversation to end. Too much preparation can be a disaster just as often as not enough of it.
