About Me
THE ARTS AND RELATIONSHIPS: Good films, theater, dance, music, painting, photography, sculpture, writing and relationships entertain us. Great films, theater, dance, music, painting, photography, sculpture, writing and relationships take us to places we have never been before.
MONEY: The more we amass, the more choices we have. Nothing more, nothing less. Good health, great friends and sunsets are free. I never chased the dollar. The quality of my life is always more important than the quantity.
POLITICS: I'm a Democrat, voting for Obama. Is it important? Probably not as much as we would like it to be. It is easier to campaign for President, than to be our President. Our foreign policy, going back to Washington, has been abysmal, regardless of the administration. Obama speaks to our voices for change and hope. That, alone, is a HUGE upgrade from the current resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue! On January 20, 2009, we will finally have a President whose first language is English! America and the world will once again be proud of a President that represents ALL of our citizenry. He will lead us into thinking beyond our individual, short term needs.
FOOD: Yes, presentation is nice. But, I eat to live, not the other way around. A meal is only as good as the people with which you are eating. I've had, "C," experiences at The Four Seasons and, "A," remembrances at Carl's.
HUMOR: Love Scott Adam's "Dilbert." I don't date ladies that have lived in the Arctic Circle and Antarctica (bipolar). I meditate (not medicate) daily. Here's a joke, for all you high maintenance ladies: A man and woman are out on their first date. As the man drives, his passenger says, "Take me to the most expensive place you can think of!" He drops her off at a Chevron station!
BAGGAGE: We all have it. Mine is carry on, as I expect yours to be.
READING: Favorite author (fiction): John Le Carre` In non-fiction, I read about political science, in America. Last book read: Philip Roth's "Everyman."
EXERCISE: Tennis, swimming, biking, walking. Habits of a lifetime. I love being out of doors. This old dog is fit. Please share my feelings about this vessel our parents gave us. I have been an athlete, all of my life. I don't expect you to be one. I DO expect you to be fit (meaning, that your weight is proportionate to your height). I weigh 160lbs, with a 31" waist. I take no medications. I had a complete physical, in June, 2008, with NO problems, of any kind.
SPORTS: I have seen many Charger and Padre games. I don't obsess over these activities.
POSSESSIONS: I neatly take care of my condo & car. I expect the same, from you. I do NOT possess people.
MY THREE PASSIONS:
(1) YOU. Someone who is kind; who respects everyone, regardless of their station in life. You are intelligent, verbal, funny (a bit edgy is good), PHYSICALLY FIT, a light drinker (I rarely drink), not narcissistic and not politically extreme (left or right). It is important that you are sensual (into your five senses). And that you have a passion for something (besides me). Something in your gut that you think about daily; that brings meaning to your life. I will explain to you, why this is so important for me (when I know you better).
(2) MUSIC. Favorite composer: Antonio Carlos Jobim. The late Brazilian composer, from Rio, was called, "The Gershwin of Brazil." Someday, I'll go there, exiting the airplane, at Rio's International Airport, to see his name, emblazoned overhead. His country saw fit to honor their airport with his name. I am a HUGE jazz fan (straight ahead, traditional, on 88.3; not that smooth jazz crap on 98.1)! I belong to the Athenaeum, in La Jolla. I attend great concerts, at their three venues. It's just the BEST! On June 8th, the greatly talented husband/wife team of Wofford & Hofmann (with strings), played an evening of Jobim's music (it was HEAVEN)! Andrea Bocelli's, "Vivere/Tuscany," DVD, is great!
(3) INDIE FILMS. Favorite film: To Kill A Mockingbird. I enjoy intelligent films. Films that don't force you to suspend your disbelief. Films with back stories, dream sequences and sub plots, like: (21 Grams, Syriana, Mystic River, The Constant Gardener, Atonement, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Five Easy Pieces, The Fabulous Baker Boys, Twelve Angry Men, Off The Map, Judgment At Nuremberg, The Door In The Floor, etc). And clever, well written films, such as, "Thank You For Smoking" and "Sideways." Finally, great film noir classics, such as, "Chinatown" and "L.A. Confidential." I do NOT enjoy foreign films, with subtitles. It's like watching a vertical tennis match. Films are visual and auditory. Reading sub titles keeps you from seeing every detail. Our best American (male) actor today? Sean Penn. Jeff Bridges is a close second, followed by Ed Norton and Guy Pierce (Australian). I enjoy complex films; NOT complex relationships!
PERSONALITY: I took the Briggs-Meyers test, on this site, with a final reading of: ENFJ. I am open, easy going and self confident. IQ: 135 (hardly Einsteinian, but OK). I am not a clingy person. I will honor your space and privacy. I have an, "A," type personality (but, I know how to relax, too)!
MISCELLANEOUS: I am a city man, living (by choice) in a beach community that is small and casual. Raised in Illinois, as a Presbyterian, I am no longer religiously active. I'm more spiritual, now. My circadian clock has always been set for days (up early; to bed by 11:00pm). I have no pets, but grew up with dogs (which I prefer, over cats). At my resident condo complex, I am president of our homeowners' association (my small way of giving back to my community). I am a long time member of the Zoo/Wild Animal Park. I've lived in California Since 1962 (25 yrs in Santa Barbara and 21 yrs in San Diego County). I will continue living in SoCal. NO CURRENT PHOTO, NO 2ND DATE!
WHAT I WILL GIVE TO YOU: My word (which is everything). My respect. My ear (actively listening to you and giving feedback). Laughter. Politeness (I will open all doors for you, including the one to my heart). My undying love. One great lady who will be my friend, my peer, my lover. I prefer a retired lady. We need time, building a history together. And spontaneity.
On May 26, 2008, our next President, Barak Obama, was giving a Memorial Day address, in New Mexico. It was a moving reminder of what we owe our Veterans (those still with us and those that stayed behind). He spoke of a bracelet, that he wears, always, sent to him by a mother of a slain soldier. Her son was to have been discharged, in one week, but decided to join his buddies, for one last (voluntary) mission to Mosel. He didn't make it back. On the bracelet it says: ALL GIVE SOME; SOME GIVE ALL. I was in the military, but never in harm's way. I will give you my all.
First Date
I would suggest a quiet place, eliminating noisy distractions. Possibly a park, a walking trail, or an ocean beach walk, in the sand. Yes, the beach has sound (I wouldn't call it noise). Then, after our walk, I'll spring for lunch (I'm not rich, but I'm not cheap, either)! I'm open to your suggestions, as well. Now that I am retired, I have more time to reflect. I'm seeking a life partner who, when I touch her (in privacy or in public), she will make my heart sing, as my music does for me. We all lead parallel lives, never quite touching. Occasionally, two lines break at the same place and two people meet. The magic we have always wanted, is there! Want to see a wonderful film that reflects these thoughts? Get, "Next Stop Wonderland," released in 2000 and shot on location, in Boston. Hope Davis, Alan Gelfant and Philip Seymour Hoffman, star. I love this film and it is replete with Jobim's music! While the magic, for me, has yet to happen, I haven't given up. Should we never meet, I'll always have this elegant and exquisite music, that warms my winter nights. My life continues to be a great ride! I will respond to all inquiries.
