About Me
i'm just checking things out because a friend mentioned this site.
i did 6 years of nuclear engineering on submarines in the navy and spent up to 10 months out of the year under water. got my degree from texas a&m in mechanical engineering (righty, tighty, lefty, loosey) and then moved to dfw to work for american airlines. i left my job as an engineer at lockheed martin in ft worth to start law school. so, yes, i'm an engineer...but i can't even remember the last time i saw an episode of star trek.
i love dublin dr pepper, shiner bock, and my chocolate lab. i adopted an 18-month old female chocolate lab in April '07. i was going to name her bella, but there seemed to be a lot of bellas around so i took votes on naming her 'soda' or 'seven' and seven won. I watch too much seinfeld. i don't have a home phone. i tell myself it's because i'm a guy and there's no way i'm gonna use up all of my cell minutes, anyway, but i think the real reason i don't have a home phone is because i know if i did have a home phone the answering machine message would start with, 'believe it or not, jer isn't at home, where could he be?...'
i like cats who think they're dogs, but i'm a dog person all the way. i love it when i have time to cook, and try to cook at least once or twice a week (and end up with tons of leftovers for the week).
i grew up in magnolia, texas and used to ride horses but can't remember the last time i was on a horse. we moved about every two years when i was a kid, so i've lived all over. i did end up in virginia all through high school, so that was great. i loved high school. at the senior awards dinner in high school i was voted 'class clown' and 'wittiest' so people always expect me to keep them entertained. i think i have a bit of a sarcastic sense of humor at times, but not in a mean way. i enjoy going out with friends, but i try to avoid the bar scene if i'm not going with people i already know. i attend a nondenominational church but haven't really met many people since I moved to dallas because i've spent most of my free time at the library since i moved here. i bought a condo a mile from the law school parking garage for the nice, short, stress-free commute to classes.
i'm almost always in a good mood, and usually get along with pretty much anyone. I usually have a ton of people i'm friendly with, but very few close friends. actually, i could use a couple of close friends, now.
the places i've enjoyed the most have been italy, bermuda, greece, st croix, and st bart. aside from some spectacular beaches, the most relaxing time i've ever had was sitting on the patio at a bar in italy drinking wine with a baguette for the entire day.
the place i enjoyed visiting the least is egypt (nice to see the pyramids and the sphinx, but not a pleasant place to relax and enjoy a stress-free visit).
my name isn't jer, but some of my friends call me jer. i've got the nice guy curse. i always have tons of female friends who ask me for advice they never take. i don't understand why, but many of them are either still hung up on an ex or they haven't grown out of the phase of dating jerks because they're a challenge. and i have yet to say 'i told you so'
i love tivo. my favorite tv is scrubs, 24, prison break, and rescue me.
i tend to babble. i'm a very honest person. i don't bother lying because i babble so much there is no way i'd be able to keep track of a story the next time i told it if it didn't actually happen that way.
random jer trivia: i have the perfect cell phone ringtone. (think 80s music....by men at work....perfect cell phone ring tone) i was a radio dj in college. i can still wear jeans i wore in high school (32" waist, 34" length) i know all of the words to The Rockford Files theme song. everyone thinks they know where to find the best burger in dfw, but they're wrong...i know where to find the best burger in dfw! mom says i'm a catch. carly simon even wrote a song about me. yes, the rumors are true...i was Time Magazine's Person of the year in 2006. so i've got that goin' for me, which is nice.
First Date
first date wouldn't actually be a date...most likely be something casual and short, like meeting for coffee (i hate having to put that as a 'first date' and i don't even drink coffee), smoothie, ice cream, or happy hour to chat and catch up. much less stress, then we could decide on something for an actual first date if we're interested. it could be later that day or the next day...either way the actual first date would be much less stressful that way.
women who shoot pool are hot!
i can have fun doing pretty much anything with the right person.
lately i've been a bit of a homebody...just relaxing and low stress/low drama.
i think you can learn a lot from cheesy 80s movies. like 'some kind of wonderful' - i'd rather be alone for the right reasons than with someone for the wrong reasons.
UPDATE: had a great summer associate position in the intellectual property section at a firm downtown and it was great. i'm taking the rest of the summer off to study for the patent bar exam. so i'm home, trying to get motivated. usually taking study breaks to play with my dog and take her for walks. seems like a nice area, and very pet-friendly. when i take my doggie out i always see at least 6 other people walking their dog. law school is a lot of reading and briefing cases. not exactly fun, but kind of exciting.
i lined up a sweet summer associate position lined up at a huge firm downtown. yay!
