I think that a lot of people just write what they think you - the reader - may want to hear/see, rather than just being honest about who they really are. So it becomes a fabrication of credentials. Besides, doesn't everyone look good on paper? Everyone embellishes their resume to some degree and why should it be different here? After all, this may be a life placement for some and others not so much. In any event, I truly believe to get to know the "real" person it takes more than just reading a profile to decide if that person is authentic and genuine.
I like to dig deep, go beyond the surface and see what's underneath it all. Yes, initially, the attraction is visual however, for me, it can take a quick turn for the worse if I sense ignorance, disregard for others and arrogant behaviour. Those are turn-offs for me, but hey, to some those may be a treasure. We all can't like the same things.
