About Me

Overview
Previously I had done my profile in a more traditional way. I read it over and over and really liked it. Much thought and time had been put into it. I then asked three of my female friends to read and critique it. Their consensus was that it was well written and very interesting. They did point out, however, that some of the material may not be appropriate for this site. As one said to me, "Don, I want to come to this site to feel good, not to feel bad." So I took their advice and decided to try something different.
Instead of going through a litany of accomplishments, expectations, likes and dislikes, etc., I've decided to present myself in the format that you see here. By reading this you will get a good indication of the person I am. Revisions will be made as needed. I will make every effort to try and keep the material current, although it's easier said than done.
You're invited to stop by periodically and visit. All comments are most welcome, whether positive or negative.

The Dilemma
To laugh is to risk appearing a fool. To weep is to risk appearing sentimental. To reach out for another is to risk involvement. To expose feelings is to risk rejection. To place your dreams before the crowd is to risk ridicule. To love is to risk not being loved in return. To go forward in the face of overwhelming odds is to risk failure. But risks must be taken, because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing. The person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, is nothing. He may avoid suffering and sorrow, but he cannot learn, feel, change, grow, or love. Chained by his certitudes, he is a slave. He has forfeited his freedom. Only a person who takes risks is free.

Friendship
"A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out." - Winchell

"One friend, one person who is truly understanding, who takes the trouble to listen to us as we consider our problem, can change our whole outlook on the world." - Mayo

"You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you." - Carnegie

"Sometimes the measure of friendship isn't your ability to not harm but your capacity to forgive the things done to you and ask forgiveness for your own mistakes." - Milholland

Love
"Never pretend to a love which you do not actually feel, for love is not ours to command." - Watts

"Such is the inconsistentcy of real love, that it is always awake to suspicion, however unreasonable; always requiring new assurances from the object of its interest." - Radcliffe

"All love that has not friendship for its base, is like a mansion built upon sand." - Wilcox

"To be brave is to love someone unconditionally, without expecting anything in return. To just give. That takes courage, because we don't want to fall on our faces or leave ourselves open to hurt." - Madonna

"Love is everything its cracked up to be....It really is worth fighting for, being brave for, risking everything for." - Jong

Remembrances
** "I think a hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles." - Christopher Reeve

** "I have striven not to laugh at human actions, not to weep at them, not to hate them, but to understand them." - Spinoza

** "Great ideas come into the world as gently as doves. Perhaps, then, if we listen attentively, we shall hear, amid the uproar of empires and nations, a faint flutter of wings, the gentle stirrings of life and hope. Some will say that this hope lies in a nation, others in a man. I believe, rather, that it is awakened, revived, nourished by millions of solitary individuals whose deed and works every day negate frontiers and the crudest implications of history.....Each and every man, on the foundation of his own suffering and joys, builds for all." - Camus

** "We can forget those with whom we have laughed, but we can never forget those with whom we have cried." - Gibran

** Dedicated to those who have passed from the scene. I will never forget them. Their courage, determination, will to live, unconditional love, and zest for life has always served as an inspiration to me. Because of them, the world is a better place. May they rest in peace.

First Date
For starters, a cup of coffee will do. Beyond that, our minds will guide us; our instinct and feelings will tell us.
