About Me

Some facts about me:

I have two masters degrees: one in English literature and one in Film Studies.

I work out five times a week and prefer to live unencumbered by alcohol, nicotine, and drugs. I don’t even use medicine unless I have to. Although I’m “health conscious,” I’m not a vegetarian.

The people whose ideas influenced me most stressed living a great life over attaining material success. I work and pay my bills (and have leisure to boot). But I don't measure my self-worth through my self-abnegating employment at someone else's service.

There isn't anything that I'm afraid to talk about. When asked a direct question, even one posed by a complete stranger that most people would consider "too private" or intrusive, I answer directly, honestly, and without shame. C'est vrai.

I used to cater for a living and collect recipes from Gourmet, Saveur, and Bon Appétit magazines. So, I know how to cook and enjoy doing so for people about whom I care. I also enjoy giving massages and frequently receive compliments for my technique.

For me, confidence is the most attractive quality in a woman.

I allow my relationships to grow naturally without the pressure of moving faster than is necessary. Also, when I date a woman I like a lot, I enjoy lavishing her with various tokens of my affection--not necessarily tangible gifts. I go out of my way to do things for her and make her feel appreciated.

I buy CDs by the pound. Although I do download music sometimes (both legally and illegally), I prefer hard copies.

I obstinately insist on articulating my thoughts in sentences complete with subjects, verbs, and objects without recourse to abbreviated words or “emoticons.” Don’t lol. ooloo.

I have a sardonic, satirical sense of humor.

I am capable of both great contemplativeness and uninhibited mirth. I have the patience and intellectual discipline to think about things intensely and at length; but I am also high energy when I have fun.

I am also very polite and courteous to other people—believe it or not.

I frequently sing songs and randomly insert my cats' names into the lyrics even if it makes no sense whatsoever.

I have sworn to never see Titanic or Indiana Jones & the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull as long as I live. Although, on the whole, I dislike Hollywood movies, I’m a complete sucker for James Bond movies; they epitomize everything I hate about Hollywood movies, but I get excited every time a new one comes out.

I hate the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.

I would like to spend a week in Chicago immersing myself in the blues--maybe in the spring or summer. Care to join me?

The ideal woman, to me, has the following qualities:

independence, intelligence, courteous, thoughtful, confidence, a critical thinker, adventurous, uninhibited, warmth, affectionate, assertive, has her own identity, open-minded yet not labile. (Oh, wait, these are the qualities that all men want, right?) She also wins bonus points if she can eat chicken feet at dim sum with me!

The Last Five Books I Read:

The Uprising: An Unauthorized Tour of the Populist Revot Scaring Wall Street and Washington by David Sirota, Slow Man by J. M. Coetzee, When I Grow Up by Juliana Hatfield, The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism by Naomi Klein, The Dead Emcee Scrolls: The Lost Teachings of Hip-Hop by Saul Williams

Some things I’m looking forward to:

*I'm going to Toronto (my favorite city) to dance at my favorite club and see You Say Party! We Say Die! (who are banned from playing the U.S. because the Department of Homeland Security is stupid) in mid-October.
*Henry Rollins is doing his spoken word show, which I never miss, in Buffalo at the end of October.
*The next James Bond movie comes out in November.
*Buddy Guy is playing Water Street Music Hall at the end of November. I thought I was lucky to see him once in my life; I can't believe I'll actually see him twice in one year!
*I’m going to take a trip to the Netherlands in January.
*Tom Robbins has a new book coming out in February 2009.
*Depeche Mode are working on their new album and they will embark on their "Tour of the Universe" in 2009.

Some sententious words of wisdom from me:

*One’s job should be a means to one’s existence, not vice versa.
*The “coolest” people are also the most inconsiderate. This is because they are so involved with "doing their own thing" that they don't realize they inconvenience others.
*It should come as no surprise that people persistently use cell phones so selfishly. Cell phones are, after all, a product of the Regan era.

Some words of wisdom from other people:

“No such thing as spare time/No such thing as free time/No such thing as down time/All you’ve got is life time/Go!” – from the Rollins Band song “Shine,” lyrics by Henry Rollins

"No kiss is ever wasted, not even on the lottery ticket kissed for good luck...The best kisses, though, are those between lovers, because those are the consequential ones, the risky ones, the transformative ones, the ones that call the nymphs and satyrs back to life, the many-layered kisses that we dive into as into a fairy-tale frog pond or the warm whirlpool of our origins." - from "The Kiss" by Tom Robbins

"Hat man mich verstanden? — Dionysos gegen den Gekreuzigten.” --from Ecce Homo by Friedrich Nietzsche

First Date
For a first date, I'm disinclined towards noisy places or distracting atmospheres like bars or movie theaters. I would prefer to go somewhere to have a real conversation to get to know one another. Then we can decide if we like one another enough to spend time together.
