UPDATE:
12-27-2008
Well, once again I'm off. I accepted an assigment in Alaska and It looks as if I'll be moving around the first of Febuary. It looks like I'll be in alaska for at least a year if not longer. Kinda scary since I don't know anyone in Alaska and honestly don't know what to expect but, I live for adventure so off I go...

*UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE*
*1-16-2009*

Well it's offical! I'll be in Anchorage on the 24th of January. Let the adventure begin... I'm excited!

Also you should know... My computer is packed up so I have to use my cell phone to access the site. That means my replies will be short due to those tiny keys...LOL.
Looking forward to making new friends and embracing the Alaska lifestyle. I'm going to be here awhile...at least 2 years, maybe forever!

***Well I'm Here!!!***

I spent a week in Anchorage and bought a little notebook computer so I can stay intouch. I'm in Tatalina right now on a mountain at a LRRS.

No roads to go anywhere. You can only get here by airplane but, wow is it pretty! what great mountains and fantastic sky's (when you can see them).

I arrived in McGrath on a tuesday at 9:20 am and it was 48 below so I had to wait till about 3pm till the temp gou up to -35 so the small plane that was chartered could fly me the 12 miles or so to the site.

There are only 5 of us here and one will be leaving in a week.
It's pretty cool here lots of work to do! and Great food! They feed us well!

I have to curb myself so I don't put on weight but the site has a gym (I'm the only one that uses it) that I have been hitting hard each night so I don't put on the pounds form all this cooking.

One of the people on the site is a amazing cook! I can cook pretty well myself but, we have an assigned cook so the kitchen is off limits to the rest of us.

Well, I have to go now, things to do...more later.

3-6-2009:

I have been at Barrow Point for a week now and it's cold and dry...did I say dry... Artic desert.

Internet access is sparce where I am.

I'm at Barrow Point LLRS at present and I go back to Tatalina LLRS on the 9th or so.

We are having blizzard conditions here... It was about -30 and the wind is around 40-45 knots so the wind chill is...well cold!

I'm having a great time so far... long days (12 hours of work) nothing to really do after work but, I am exploring the places I go as much as I can with the cold and snow.

Alaska is a really beautiful place and the people are second to none! I really like it here Wish I had more time to explore places other than the bases I work at but, it's still a great adventure.

I saw Moose and a Polar bear... One looked angry and the other looked like it wanted to have me for lunch...you figure out which ones...LOL.

3-22-09
Well I'm back at Tatalina LLRS, Finishing up a special project I started before being shipped away to Barrow. I'll be leaving in a few days for Sparrevohn AFS for another special project there. Forgive me for not asnsweing mail promptly but, I really don't have a lot of time for personal things and the time I do have is well needed down time and honestly I just crash.

The weather at Tatalina is much warmer than Barrow, it's a balmy -9 at present. The Moose are out roaming and I guess it's about time for the bears here to wake up so, you have to be alert when you are outside. Getting hurt is not an option since a medivac is 3 hours or more away.

I must say even though there is a lot of isolation and risk I am really enjoying my work. It's not just a job it's an adventure...LOL...

More later from Sparrevohn when I have a chance.

4-30-09:

Ok I'm not in Sparrevohn, Got different orders. I'm in Ft. Yukon which has the reputation of being the coldest Air Force base in the world. Mean average temp of 20 deg.

It's pretty warm here now yesterday it got to 50ish. What a difference from 3 weeks ago. Break up is going on, that's where all the ice and snow melt and make a mess. I'm on permafrost so it's not too bad.

It's just me and another guy here so it's good we get along or there would be no one to talk to. I got tired of my hair since I haven't been able to get it cut for a few months soo... I shaved it off...it will grow back no chance of baldness here unless I shave it..LOL.

Lots of animals around. I saw a couple of Eagles and the Bears are waking up so you have to be aware of whats going on when you are outside... They are hungry and in a kinda pissed off mood so it's best to keep your distance.

I'm going to be here for a few more weeks, not sure how long as I haven't gotten my travel orders and I really don't know where I'll be next...maybe Tin City I don't know.

Internet is pretty scarce here at the base...It dosen't work very well because we dont have much bandwith to spare and then there are the sun spots that don't help communication...I can't believe I have been connected long enough to write this!

All and all I really love what I do and well the hardship is kinda fun too..go figure...

Oh, I almost forgot there is a native village about a mile or so from here and the people are really nice to the "white guy" I enjoy going to town to the AC Store (Alaska Commercial Store) They don't have a lot of stuff but, I have Chewing Gum now!!! Yay!

Well, I'm not going to push my luck and stay on here any longer and risk losing what I have typed, besides my watch is starting soon...

Oh if anyone actually reads this I guess I should tell you my name, It's Sam.
I'll write more later.

5-5-2009:
Still in Ft Yukon. The river is breaking up and the ice is blocking the flow where it is packing up. They expect the town close to the base to flood to maybe 8 feet deep so the residents are putting their belongings on the roofs.

We are keeping some of their goods here at the base since we are on high ground and we pumped and purified a little over 30,000 gallons of water in case we have to provide water. Down the river the town of Circle is underwater and Eagle is just gone. House sized chunks of ice just crushed everything and houses have ben swept down the Yukon. They expect it to be here by tommorow. No one can remember the water getting this high. Our air field will get washed out so I may be stuck here for awhile. I couldn't fly out and just leave the village to fend for itself so I have been working late helping them move things to higher ground and bringing things to the base (I got permission). I'm really tired!
I guess I have run out of space here. It won't let me type more so, I guess the updates end. maybe I'll remove the top ones...I don't know.

First Date
Hey! I just figured out that I could put more of my updates here:

6-8-2009:
Well,it did flood at Ft. Yukon but, not as bad as predicted. We housed some of the native elders at the base as well as their important items.

The village of Eagle was destroyed by the high waters and house sized chunks of ice. Eagle is about 35 miles up stream from Ft. Yukon on the Yukon river.

I'm not at Ft Yukon anymore I am assigned to Indian Mountain LRRS at present and I'll be here till Aug 9.

It's on a mountain in the middle of nowhere, nothing around here except old gold mines. I panned in the Utopia river the other day for fun after work and found maybe 1/16 of an ounce of gold in about 2 hours.

One of the guys that lives on this base all the time has a small dredge and he found about 20 ounces of gold last year on his time off. Ya gotta have something to do when you are not working since there is nowhere to go except on some of the old trails and the road to top camp which is 10 miles up the mountain.

It's staying light 24 hours a day now. That's pretty cool because in the winter 24 hours of night gets a little old.
I have cardboard in my window so I can sleep. More later...

6-29-09:

Still at Indian Mountain. Most of all the snow is melted except for some at top camp. The weather has been pretty nice 40's to high 60's sometimes here at botom camp. A few bears have visited our landfill and rabbits are abundant.

Not much going on other than the day to day stuff but5, we did have some visitors come in for a few days to do some Geo stuff so it was nice to have new people around.

The mosquitoes are really bad, I mean BAD I think they have little motorcycles and leather jackets. I'm pretty sure one of them flashed me a gang sign... Actually they really are thick I have to wear DEET all the time and I have a net over my bed. So now it's sunlight all the time and Mosquitoes at least the bears arn't chasing me..Yet.

I'll be here till August 12 and then I get leave... YAY! It will be so nice to be able to go to a store and actually buy something instead of ordering stuff from a catalog and waiting. I've been waiting for new boot strings for about 3 weeks or longer but, the parachute cord is working fine so far...it's such a fashion statment. LOL. Well that's it for now more if something exciting happens.

7-26-09:
Not much going on except the routine stuff. Looking forward to my leave, it won't be long now! The weather has been nice except for all the smoke from wildfires. The temp is cooling off and we are starting to get a little bit of almost dusk around 1 am. The daylight will start to decrease around 10-15 mins each day till we get no daylight at all but, I'll be home by then.
It will be dark all the time when I return. We have had a couple of minor earthquakes and a storm or two. Well, I'm out of space to write so this ends the updates. I need a blog...
