About Me
Life's generally treating me well - not with kid gloves or silver spoons or anything, but with relatively benign neglect. Hope springs eternal and I'm hoping to meet a special someone before eternity flicks my ashes into oblivion. Someone to share the magical details which elevate the very ordinary story of a life to art, someone who'll be there to fact check, share the footnotes, savour the poetry, and keep narrating through the prosaic bits.
I have a beautiful young son who's six (and in Grade One!), a phenomenal Lego builder, and I adore him beyond all reason. He's with me full time. My family's made up of a great bunch of people who are smart, kind and generous, and whom I love dearly, and my community includes a lot of artists who are broke but know wines better than I do (all that restaurant work ya know!), and are always willing to share. Sharing is good. Generosity is its own reward. That's my politics in a nutshell. Yes to open source, crowd-sourcing, shareware! Not that economic incentive, independent initiative and individual merit don't count, because, yes oh yes, they most certainly do. They sure do here don't they!
I have utterly catholic tastes in music, so yes to Nina Simone and Shostakovich, Bach cello concertos and Steve Reich, U2 and Echo and the Bunnymen, Norah Jones and Etta James, The Who and The Style Council, Barenaked Ladies and Gordon Lightfoot and Royal Wood, Rogers and Hammerstein and Stephen Sondheim, The Tallis Scholars and The Neville Brothers, Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett, David Buchbinder and Autorickshaw, I mean, you get the idea right? If it's good and it's musical, I'll try anything.
Once I paddled the Nahanni River and hiked up Sunblood mountain and that was transcendent. I can probably save you if you're drowning in a pool or a lake, but you're on your own in the ocean. Undertows are killer. (Anyways, you're swimming along fine, right?) I like to read and talk books, politics, current affairs, keep up with the chattering class, hang out with my son in museums, galleries, and conservations areas, go hiking, cook, and eat well. I've traveled to nearly all provinces and territories in Canada. I love good food, good company, and good times! On occasion I feel a tremendous sense of gratitude and well-being for all I've had the opportunity to experience, and on the other hand, I think - what the cuss was I thinking?!!!
Other bits? New York is my favourite city in the whole world. Shopping is about procuring food and toothpaste, and not a desirable way to spend my precious leisure hours. Prior to living off the avails of your federal tax dollars, I had lots of fun making theatre, producing radio for CBC, and stuff like that. The arts are what I breathe and Treasury Board Terms and Conditions are what I obey. In most things in life, though, I'm not terribly obedient although I always appreciate grace, courtesy, kindness, thoughtfulness, and people who are decent to their very core. I genuinely like all kinds of people, but the people I respect most are people who can be certain of their uncertainty, see the value of the contradictory positions, diverse opinions, opposing values, and can laugh and despair simultaneously. You?
