I am of Jewish background, and my heritage is certainly important to me. However, I would say that my orientation is entirely secular. I believe that human solidarity is grounded in the common realities inherent in human existence: the joys, sorrows, frustrations, hopes, and limitations that we all share as human beings. I personally would never want to believe in a God that offered salvation to a select few who believed "the right thing," while consigning the rest of mankind to hellfire (or, perhaps, to some secondary tier of existence or worth). This would, I guess, make me an existentialist.

I think that it would be possible--within limits--to find common ground with a woman who holds religious belief of some kind (i.e., of a very liberal and open-minded kind).

However, let's be honest here: if you spend a great deal of time in church, at prayer, or intoning hymns, I'm probably not your guy...

This said, I also strongly believe that connections can occur across ethnic and religious backgrounds, since such factors really do not define the essence of a person. Shared ethnicity, race, or religion represent just a few bases upon which the foundations of enduring relationships can be built. There are very many others...

I would strongly encourage anyone who feels an affinity with me, based upon what I've written here, to contact me immediately. My own idea of how meeting people through a service like this works is that there is an exchange of e-mail that reveals common interests and values, and the building of a genuine excitement in anticipation of a face-to-face meeting. By the time of the actual meeting, then, what is happening is not a "blind date" but a personal encounter between two people who already, to a very significant extent, know one another.

By "synergistic relationship" I mean to draw attention to the reality that a person emphasizes particular aspects of his or her personality (while subduing others) as a result of the choice of life partner. In other words, you define yourself, in large part, by the person you choose to have a relationship with.

I have to say that I have at times been disappointed at how little effort persons have been willing to put into getting acquainted through an exchange of e-mails. When someone reveals little of themselves, shows little interest in the other person, and generally conveys the attitude that they "can't be bothered", it is rather difficult to get excited about the prospect of spending an hour or two in their company. Such people reveal a lot about themselves, and their readiness for a mature relationship, irrespective of how physically attractive, financially successful, or hard-working they may be.
