Who decided the Body Descriptions? What is overweight?
by Steven B.Halls, MD
A Body Mass Index(BMI) between 25 and 29.9 is "overweight", and greater than or equal to 30 is "obese", according to a recent definition. This definition is used by the World Health Organization (WHO) as its international standard. You can read more about it, (including its problems) - "Google it".
Adults Women Men anorexia under-17.5 underweight under-19.1 under-20.7 in normal range 19.1-25.8 20.7-26.4 marginally overweight 25.8-27.3 26.4-27.8 overweight 27.3-32.3 27.8-31.1 very overweight or obese over-32.3 over-31.1 obese(Class I) 35 - 40 obese(Class II) 41 - 50 obese(Class III) 51 - 60
To calculate your Body Mass Index(BMI), take your weight (in kilograms), and divide by your height (in meters) squared. BMI = kg/(m*m)
So whats my BMI? you ask well time to do some Googling lets take an "AVERAGE" Canadian woman 5'4" and say 150 lb first some conversion info 12 inches = 1 foot 1 inch = 2.54 cm 100 cm = 1 meter 1 lb = 0.454 kg
So to convert 5'4" to meters first multiply 5' by 12 (inches in a foot) and add it to 4 from the 5'4" 60+4 so an average Canadian woman is 64" to convert that to cm multiply by 2.54 = 162.56cm now divide by 100 for that in meters =1.6256m An average Canadian woman is 1.6256 m tall to convert 150 lb to kg just multiply by 0.454 = 68.1kg
Now to the final step Is an average Canadian woman Average? Based on the WHO (World Health Organization) standards?
BMI = kg/(m*m) -- (m*m = meters squared) BMI = 68.1 /(1.6256*1.6256) BMI = 68.1 / 2.643
BMI = 25.766
Now looking at the above table the stats show that in normal range a womans' BMI should be 19.1-25.8 so YES a 150lb 5'4" woman SHOULD put "AVERAGE" in her profile. HOWEVER if she were much lighter she should not she should put "THIN", if she were any heavier like even 1 lb heavier she would be "marginally overweight" or say that she has "A FEW EXTRA POUNDS" if however she was much heavier say 39 lb heavier she lands at the start of the very overweight or obese section and should more probably put down "BIG & TALL/BBW" as her Body Type.
Why do I say all this? ... cuz everyone I know, hates going out expecting one thing and getting another because "weight is in the eye of the beholder" DON'T set your self up for a fall if your a larger woman or guy, fine BE HAPPY with it and be UP FRONT. Don't if your 250lb and 5' say your average cuz HONEST your not.. not a biggie but if a someone goes out lookin' for an average person and sees you ... the reaction to you WILL be negative.. have the people that ARE looking for a nice girl/guy who don't care about size or shape be the ones that contact you. You will feel much better about your meetings and so will the other person :)
