I believe the best way to get to know a person on a first date is to meet in a public place for a cool drink or a warm cup of coffee with good conversation. If all goes well then perhaps spend an afternoon together watching live music, checking out local events, sharing a picnic with a good bottle of wine, trip to the ocean, stargazing...I'm flexible!
