To Be Married May 2009
According to Mike: I had met women on POF a few years before I met Brenda and did not have the success that I sought. Frustrated with dating - especially online dating - I gave up and went about it the old fashioned way and had even less success. What changed for me? Well, I ended up looking for new approaches to meeting and dating people. I actually used a few online book programs that didn’t teach me/guys how to use pick-up lines or “tricks” to get women’s interest. Instead, I learned just how to be myself, unapologetically, and have fun and security in my own skin. In the past, I wouldn’t discuss things about myself that I believed would turn women off, like my hobbies, interests, views on life’s issues, politics, etc. When I returned to POF I did just the opposite: I revealed these qualities a little at a time and this kept things interesting for the women I met and fun for me which just built my self-confidence and optimism about dating. I also started to pursue people who were not in the same professional background as I am and diversified my acquaintances beyond work. I sought someone different than me, even an opposite. During dates I would set up something simple: coffee/mall walks. Something very low key and if things went well then going to dinner or other places were an option. In the beginning, if I found someone I liked, I would keep the dates limited to shorter one or two hour periods of time and went from there to go and do my own thing/activities there after. Some important lessons came from this. I discovered that revealing a little about myself at a time during dates, enough to chat about, but not so much for my date to process, was a winning strategy and kept things interesting for women. The other lesson learned from this was that I found a balance in dating, socializing and personal time to pursuit my own interests and hobbies which, guys, women love about us. It wasn’t like in the past where I would center my whole life around work and meeting someone to date. In other words, I learned to give women the gift of missing me a little bit and the phone calls and emails would flow to the point that sometimes I couldn’t keep up with them all! Then, I met Brenda and our first date happened, which… I’ll let her tell you about this point in the story. According to Brenda: Before Mike and I met, I had gone on 6 first dates with POF people. I just didn’t really connect with anyone. Since I’m not particularly outgoing with new people in person, and have a young daughter, this seemed like a good way to meet a wider variety of people who were also interested in a relationship. I also remained open minded and met and chatted with a variety of men who, in the past, I might not have taken immediate interest in. Then Mike and I met. Just as I was logging off one night, he contacted me via chat. I told him that I needed to go to bed, but that I’d love to talk with him at a different time. We exchanged a few messages, and really hit it off during our first phone call. During that conversation, I learned about international politics, Buddhism and cartooning. He was funny and confident and intriguing. We talked about things we were passionate about--not the weather or generic pop culture. Between my parenting schedule, differing work schedules and us living about 40 miles apart, it was a bit of a challenge to find a time to meet in person. We had our first date at the Urban Bean coffee shop in Uptown Minneapolis. It went from coffee, to dinner, to a walk by Lake Calhoun. After that, we got together every chance we could and he met my daughter and they hit it off as well. (He is her Mikey, which is adorable.) About a year later, after we attended a wedding, we started to talk about the future. In March, Mike and I both had the day off, and we spent an afternoon at the Urban Bean. I read a magazine while he drew cartoons of people in the coffee shop. After he had worked on a second cartoon for a while, Mike said that he had a drawing, but he needed help finishing it. He showed it to me, and it was a cartoon of him down on one knee asking me if I would marry him, and I started to cry. He asked me to fill in the dialogue balloon above the picture of me, which I of course filled in as “Yes!” As of May 17th, we began beginning our happily ever after. From this whole thing, I learned to just be myself. I also learned that if it isn’t working out, don’t spend a lot of time trying to be something that you’re not in hopes that you can “make it work.” All you are doing is delaying the inevitable break up that needs to happen. I learned to be who I was--a woman with a good job who is organized, driven, has a daughter and is pretty forthright. I learned that I need someone who is confident and assertive who lets me know when I’m being ridiculous, but who is also kind and caring and giving. I think Mike and I found each other at a good time in our lives where we both had a good sense of who we were and what we were looking for, and we found what we wanted in one another.

Engaged May 2009
When I signed up on POF, I expected to meet some men and go on a few dates. I had been a member for about two months when I found Lon through a search and sent him a message. After exchanging a few messages and emails we met for dinner on March 28.The conversation and laughter were so natural and I knew before dinner was over I wanted a second date. Lon walked me back to my car and gave me a wonderful kiss and asked for that second date. We went out again the next week and have been together as much as possible ever since. On May 17th he got down on one knee, pulled the ring out of his pocket and asked me to marry him. Of course I said yes. Thank you POF for a great service.
